Fibroid Surgery Q & A

What are uterine fibroids?

Uterine fibroids are benign tumors that grow on the uterus when the body produces too much muscle fiber in that area. They are extremely common; as many as 20-40% of women will deal with uterine fibroids at some point in their lives.

Although these tumors are technically benign, uterine fibroids can cause a number of symptoms, including:

  • Pressure or pain in the pelvis
  • Pelvic bleeding
  • Swelling in the abdomen
  • Discomfort or pain during intercourse
  • Frequent need to urinate
  • Constipation
  • Infertility

Because of their negative impact on uterine comfort and ability to function normally, many uterine fibroids need to be removed from the body. Dr. Farnam can apply a wait-and-see approach to determine if your fibroids will resolve on their own, can offer Acessa™ fibroid removal (a radiofrequency ablation procedure that destroys fibroids), or can employ minimally invasive surgery.

How are uterine fibroids removed surgically?

Uterine fibroids are the leading reason for hysterectomies in the United States. If you want or need a hysterectomy to put a permanent stop to your uterine fibroids and their impact on your life, Dr. Farnam is here to help. As one of the most experienced providers of minimally invasive hysterectomies in the nation, he can perform either a total or subtotal hysterectomy that comes with minimal downtime, pain, and scarring.

Dr. Farnam performs hysterectomies laparoscopically. During this type of hysterectomy, he makes three extremely small incisions on your abdomen. He can access the uterus via those incisions, aided by a camera mounted on the end of the laparoscope. He can safely and effectively remove your uterus – along with its fibroids – without the need to open your abdomen surgically. Dr. Farnam has personally performed 2,500 robotic surgeries.

Can I have uterine fibroids removed without impacting my fertility?

If you don’t want to lose your ability to bear children with the removal of your uterine fibroids, Dr. Farnam offers robotic myomectomies. He can access and see your uterine fibroids by making small incisions on the abdomen, then feeding his laparoscope – which is equipped with a small camera – and telescopic precision instruments into the incisions to remove the uterine fibroids while protecting the uterus and your fertility. Dr. Farnam also performed the Acessa fibroid ablation procedure, as well as MyoSure® hysteroscopic fibroid removal.
